I followed Eleanor Burns' method for her Log Cabin Quilt in a Day. In this particular book, she has many (like maybe 20!) different settings for log cabin blocks.
I showed DH the different settings and he liked the 'Navajo' set best.
I decided to add more blocks and smaller borders instead of fewer blocks and larger borders. For two main reasons: 1. I had more blocks and 2. I had less border fabric. :)
Funny how it all seems to work out. Tomorrow I will be working on adding the borders.
I'd like to thank my friend, Joan of Quilt Country for this quilt inspiration. Back when we were bee friends (like a gazillion years ago when I lived in North Texas!), I was whining that I wanted to make a quilt for my bed and DH said positively NO BRIGHT COLORS! Joanie looked at me and deadpanned, "whatcha ya gonna do?! Make a BROWN quilt?!" This conversation took place like in 2004 before brown was an 'in' quilting color! Joanie has probably long since forgotten her off handed (and perhaps, just a tiniest bit sarcastic (!?)) comment to me...but it was enough to plant a seed for this quilt in my mind way back when...
I love the setting you are proposing for your log cabin quilt! Log cabin quilts have always been a favorite of mine. Good for you to push another quilt forward towards the finish line! You will be through that list of 10 quilts in no time!
ReplyDeletePat, I love the brown quilt! I did a similar quilt for my Dad last year and thought it came out pretty masculine although I didn't use this setting. Your blocks looks terrific. I had to paper piece mine to get them even close to square.

My first quilt was a log cabin made with the same Eleanor Burns book and my son still uses it every night.
ReplyDeleteI love the red centers of yours with the brown and cream. Very lovely....
Wow this is beautiful. Log cabins are my absolute favorite. I have a white and tan one that is a WIP. Some day soon I will finish it. Wishful thinking. :)
ReplyDeleteMy very first completed quilt was Eleanor Burns Log cabin - brown and cream. I even saw a free demo by EB when she was promoting her book. This was before rotary cutters were invented and we tore the strips. I like the setting you chose. I am inspired by your determination to finish those UFO's.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, Pat! Love the setting and the browns. A few years ago I might not have liked the browns, but when brown is in - we all start to like it. Right? Great job on the piecing.
ReplyDeleteNice setting, Pat! I'm so glad brown is back in; a while back I tried to get some brown shoes and was told, "Brown is not a color." You proved him wrong! And I love that you kept the traditional red centers.
ReplyDeleteOoooohhh-I LIKE the brown!
