Design Wall Monday 12.30.2024

I pulled out my Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2024 Scrap Block Buster's blocks. whew...try saying that fast!

In any event, I knew that I would have blocks to fill in once I made the layout decision. Looks like I've got my work cut out for me! I have lots of Block B to make (and I don't think they can be strip pieced). DD is here visiting so there has been no time spent in the sewing room. When she's around, I like to be with her. :)

Finish or NOT Friday 12.27.2024

Today I have a sorta 'finish'. I did complete the 'foster' style tote bag for DD and received the 'go ahead' to install the zipper. Here is the tote on the design wall but I have yet to install the zipper.

pattern inspiration: Mondo bag. found here.

One set of directions for installing a recessed zipper can be found here.

WIP Wednesday 12.25.2024

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!

Our tree is tall and skinny!

I worked on turning the handles for DD's tote bag while I was waiting for Amazon deliveries. I set up work in DH's office as it has the perfect view of our street and front of the house.

I also put the finishing touches on the gift quilts. This time I set up in the dining room. All 11 of the quilts were upstairs and I thought the binding supplies would be easier to transfer than the quilts!

Here are the 11 quilts wrapped and ready to gift.

Disclaimer: I made most of the quilt December 2023 but then didn't gift them. This year, I decided to give the quilts to DH's family and if he wanted to gift 'something else', so be it. Mainly, I would rather the quilts be used and enjoyed rather than squirreled away in my sewing space. I did need to make two quilts this year as I had given away two this summer. :)

Design Wall Monday 12.23.2024

DD asked if I would make her a 'foster tote' with a zipper.

The 'foster tote' is the HowellMelonHeads adaption of the Mondo Bag. A long time ago, I made a tote then decided to add a recessed zipper.

DD wanted black denim on the outside and yellow on the inside. Her jeans are stretch but I wasn't sure exactly 'how' that would sew. I did go to the local Salvation Army and found a pair of regular black denim jeans sized 42 x 30. I then made the management decision to go with a daisy print for the interior. DD is partial to daisies as that was the name of our Golden Retriever when she was growing up.

pattern: Foster tote based on the Mondo Bag, found here.
The one I used before is now a dead link. :(

Daisy grew to a grand lady of 14 years. She loved the water (but not a bath), snow and being outside. She passed away from cancer in 2016.

Finish or NOT Friday 12.20.2024

My finish for this week is my Four in a Row quilt. I suppose I should re-name it as I elected not to make 4 patches and use a star print. Maybe Stars in a Row? Not quite the vision I had for it but, it is what it is! Done for Christmas gifting. :)

WIP Wednesday 12.18.2024

I've been working on the latest quilt, Four in a Row. I had a little miscalculation and had to adapt the pattern. Here are my choices after my 'design opportunity'.

Design Wall Monday 12.16.2024

I have one more quilt I want to complete. It is for a niece who loves black and white. A while back, JoAnn's had pre-cuts on sale so I picked up two 20 strip jelly rolls in black/white and black only. I've been trolling Pinterest and found a pattern, Four in a Row I wanted to try. Instead of 4 patches I am going to use grey star fabric and them repeat that in the outer border.

SoScrappy Saturday 12.14.2024

Yesterday was the second Saturday of December. This is the month of finishes.

I did apply the binding to my SoScrappy finish this morning. The pattern is Gumdrops set with the Hollow Nines block. I wasn't sure which color to bind with and finally settled on an orange.

Finish or NOT Friday 12.14.2024

Yesterday was a busy day from meeting a friend to Christmas gift shopping to a little grocery shopping to getting my hair done for the Christmas Dinner Party...it is Saturday before I know it! Here I am after the party with my curls starting to droop (me, too...lol) I definitely need to practice at selfies...

In did quilt and bind then next quilt in the queue. This is the farm scene fabric made with Villa Rosa Design's pattern, October Sky. This one is going to DH's work party as the 'nicer' 'white elephant. The party is next Wednesday so completed in plenty of time. His company represents and brokers raw milk for the dairy farmers here in the surrounding states of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and even as far as northern Wisconsin (close to Green Bay). I found the dairy farm scene fabric on the free table at guild and thought that this would be an unexpected 'white elephant' gift for his office Holiday Party.

Design Wall Monday 12.9.2024

Design Wall Monday...well, sorta.

My sewing mojo has gone on Christmas hiatus. :(

I've been wanting a few bigger bowl cozies and to upgrade my cereal bowl cozies. I even brought a template but never did get around to it. But I saw this on my FB feed made out of Dollar Tree pot holders. ummm...$2.50 invested into a project to 'see if' it works.

Low and behold, a few tries later yielded 3 larger and 1 smaller bowl cozy. The black one is the first and made with cotton/polyester thread. Ooops...I'll see how it does. I did buy red 100% cotton for the other three. I'm a little worried about the one with glitter but I'll be watching them in the microwave. The tag did say...heat resistant to 350F. While they are NOT the prettiest but cheaper than the cozies for sale at the Christmas Bazaar I went to over the weekend.

Note to self: Each bowl cozy takes 4 pot holders. I did zigzag first the sewed darts.

Larger: pot holders cut at 5.5 inches (as in above picture)
dart at 2 inches on zigzag side
                                                                1 inch on bound side

Smaller: pot holder cut at 4.0 inches (as in above picture)
dart at 1 inch on zigzag side
                                                                0.5 inch on bound side

There is quite a bit of waste with the smaller cozy but I want to buy more pot holders and try cut at 4.5 inches.

SoScrappy Saturday 12.7.2024

Today is the first Saturday of December of finishes. This is the last of my quilty work to show that I completed before I got busy (ah em, cough, cough) doing other than quilty things.

This is one of the Happy Blocks quilt I put together. I still have lots more Happy Blocks so when my quilty mojo returns...it's all waiting for me... :) I used some of the older blocks and the majority are girl-ish with a few boy-ish Happy Blocks thrown in for good measure. I already turned it in for our Comfort quilts so I'm hoping it already found it's forever home in time for Christmas. :)

Finish or NOT Friday 12.6.2024

I haven't done very much sewing or quilting this week.

I did manage to sew the binding onto DD's friend's baby quilt. Although the baby was born 5 weeks early, DD said everyone is fine. In all, it worked out well as DD was able to sign the label and I shipped it off last Monday.

Here is the quilt on the design wall. The new Momma's favorite color is yellow and DD wanted to pair black with the yellow. I was worried it would have major bumblebee vibes but I do like how it turned out. Not bumblebee-y at all. :)

JanP volunteered to quilt my MelonHead Christmas party donation quilts and I sewed the bindings on. My friend, Cher made the quilts circa 2008 and mailed them to me. When I found them, I offered to the MelonHeads Christmas Party as prizes. I'm afraid that I don't know any of the patterns or the quilting designs.

Here they are in no particular order:

A table runner:

A table topper:

A quilt... approximately 52 x 52:
