SoScrappy Saturday 12.31.2022

Today is the last Saturday of December of finishes!

My finish was actually finished last week and gifted to my DS's GF's Mom. Follow that trail?! She graciously offered to stay with the dogs while DD and GF spent all of Christmas Day with us. Yes, from 11 am until 9 pm plus an hour drive each way!

This was a pattern I chose for RSC2021 and was waiting for just the right occasion to be gifted!

Here is the quilt I gifted for my family exchange. I seem to be giving the RWB quilts to my family! LOL One of my crumb quilts.

WIP Wednesday 12.28.2022

I was very surprised and sadden when I read Cathy's post here about the passing of Carol from Giraffe Dreams.  While I never met Carol in person, she was always very helpful when I contacted her. First as a new blogger that was intrigued by her setting of crumb blocks, found here and then as the midwest region point person for Quilts Beyond Borders.

Carol's online charity sewing group, Sunshine Quilters are joining together to make blocks in remembrance of Carol. The block is a 12.5 inch (unfinished) Ohio Star in blue. I decided I wanted to join in even though I am not a member of the Sunshine Quilters.

I made a few Ohio Stars but I quickly remembered that I struggle not only with the creating the hourglass unit but also when sewing it into the blocks. I'm not real sure, I want to send just a few blocks that are a tad on the wonky side...or make enough for a quilt top...or send a finished quilt. I'm unaware of any deadlines and if I send a completed quilt, well...it only matters that is arrives at QBB in Carol's Memory!

SoScrappy Saturday 12.24.2022

Merry Christmas Eve to all who celebrate! I've had my 'tree' up in the sewing space since Thanksgiving and have start collecting the gifts as I wrapped.

Today is the fourth Saturday of December of the month of finishes. This is the day for my 'Missing U' quilt! I never did receive an email back from Cheryl Arkison that I could use her design in my trunk show so I donated this one at last month's guild meeting to the local Red Cross.

Finish or NOT Friday 12.23.2022

DD and Angie arrived early Thursday morning and successfully beat Winter Storm Elliot before he arrived here at Bell Creek Quilts! As promised, DD, Angie and her bone stocking. It took Angie about 45 minutes to figure out this is her stocking as she could smell the treats inside!

On the quilty front, the orange/green hst quilt is finished and ready for gifting. I decided to bind in green as the backing is mostly orange...sorry no picture and it's already wrapped!

Design Wall Monday 12.19.2022...

....late edition!

I've been busy with some Christmas-y things but managed to fit a little sewing into my schedule last week.

I started a half square triangle quilt in orange, green and white. I'm trying to re-create this quilt from 2016, blogged here.

Here are my current fabrics and a few blocks already made. I'm using the tube method to create the hst's. I cut my strips at 5 inches. Sew 1/4 inch along the long sides (both to make a tube) and use my handy dandy ruler to cut 6.5 inch hst's. They will finish in the quilt as 6 inches. Find my handy dandy ruler here but there are others on the market, too. I've had this ruler for a long time and just discovered that I like using it for tube method hst's.

SoScrappy Saturday 12.17.2022

Happy Wedding Day to our niece on DH's side of the family. It's going to be a snowy one on the western side of Michigan! We will definitely making memories this weekend!

Today is the third Saturday of December of the month of finishes. I did indeed finish off the two 'crumble jumble' blocks quilts...one just yesterday afternoon...in the nick of time!

'Crumble Jumble' #1...the onpoint setting as seen in Bonnie Hunter's String Frenzy book.

'Crumble Jumble' #2...straight set.

Finish or NOT Friday 12.16.2022

I have one small 'Finish' and one 'NOT Finished' today.

First the finish is the dog bone stocking for Angie. First photo is on the design wall and the second photo is 'in the wild', hung by her Momma's stocking.

pattern: Sew Very Crafty 'How to make a dog bone stocking' tutorial

My 'NOT finish' is one of my crumb blocks. I had made quite a few of the 'crumble jumble' blocks. I did one set on point and had enough left over for this straight set. AND! I still have 'crumble jumble' blocks leftover! I had used all the purple blocks in the on point set, found here.  So this one is just a tad smaller as I decided not to make more blocks and not to add a border. This one is for me just to show another use of crumb blocks.

Good thing that the 2023 Guild Challenge is 'Using Your Orphan Blocks'. I seem to be creating more orphans lately. LOL

WIP Wednesday 12.14.2022

I wanted to try my hand at making portable design boards. I followed Lori Holt's tutorial here but ran out of glue for my gun after two. I'm thinking I might swap out and make a different binding...something that contrast more might be nice...

Design Wall Monday 12.12.2022

DD and her dog, Angelo are going to spend a few days with us over the Christmas holiday. I found this tutorial on line and picked a few fabrics to make Angie a dog bone stocking to hang next to her Mom's. DD picked the Christmas bird fabric. She may want me to change it out once she arrives! LOL

WIP Wednesday 12.7.2022

I took Judy and Nann's suggestions and swapped out the gray for black. I also reviewed this blogpost and cut the fabric accordingly. Here is the resulting flimsy.

This flimsy definitely 'looks better' than the gray one. Here they are side by side.

Design Wall Monday 12.5.2022

I thought I would sew together a few small quilts to illustrate another setting for crumb blocks. I had found a staggered set somewhere in blog land and decided to dive right in. Here are my fabric pulls.

Well, I cut and sewed and cut and sewed and here is my first one. Uhhhh...Houston, we have a problem!

While this looks fine as is...it's not WHAT I wanted. Back to the drawing board or rather, search my blog aa I remembered I had made a staggered set using my novelties a long time ago. 2014, to be exact. Thank goodness, I was blogging pretty consistently back then and was able to find my 'note to self' on a easier construction process! Find the blog post here about an offset setting.

I'm off on a few holiday errands but hope to get to the second quilt in the coming days.

Sunday Shenanigans 12.4.2022

Just for fun, I thought I would turn the next quilt on the long arm 180 degrees. This quilt is approximately 60x 80 so I pinned the 80 inch side to the leaders on the frame. This results in the serpentine wave running vertical instead of horizontal. This is actually QOV #40 for the Casual Quilters in 2022 that I have quilted down. It took just a little more thread but finished quicker.

panto: vertical serpentine

I really like the look of the vertical wave. I'll have to remember to 'go vertical' when I have enough backing fabric to complete quilts this way. <grin>

Finish or NOT Friday 12.2.2022

Yay!

I'll take that 'Finish' today! I was able to quilt and bind my RWB Crumb BQ1 quilt! The only sad thing is that I used all my red Permacore thread and that particular red isn't available any more! so sad...but I did buy a back up spool of Guterman at JoAnn's to use with my red bindings. Like DD's BF told me, 'You can't leave money on the table' and I needed to use my $10 coupon before it expired. I treated myself to a new seam ripper, too. 😍
