SoScrappy Saturday 8.31.2024

Today is the fifth Saturday of the color orange.

Time for my Meals on Wheels place mats. The shape for the Table Scraps challenge is baskets this month. Ummm...orange baskets. Okay - lets give it a whirl.

I found this one on Pinterest:

I also found a fun basket weave block on Quilter's Cache at this link.

So in my first basket I wanted to include flowers. It seems logical to me.

ummm...no, I wasn't liking this one. So I swapped out plain for the flowers. I also ran out of one oranges for the basket weave so I substituted a plain orange into the basket.

I like these four better but the weave baskets are my favorite. I went ahead and added background to reach the desired place mat size for Meals on Wheels and finished them up.

WIP Wednesday 8.28.2024

Some time between photo 1 and photo 2, I realized I made a critical error when trying to duplicate Blockworth Orange, found here

I originally thought it was constructed in rows but I think, columns now AND, the blocks needed to be the same width but differing lengths.

Blockworth Orange.

Here is where I am at with my Blockworth Orange. I'm actually kinda liking it after all.

<grin>

I'm hoping it's NOT TOO Halloween-y with the black and orange.

Design Wall Monday 8.26.2024

I discovered this pin on Pinterest and followed it to a quilt called Blockworth Orange by Bittle Bear.

Upon further investigation, I found this picture on her website. It shows the quilt a little more.

I thought I could use my crumbs where the wacky nine patches are placed. But first, let's try and work the kinks out with 2.5 inch squares. Here are my 9 patches and my strip sets to make the bigger blocks.

I'll share all my block size measurements once I figure it all out! LOL

I have a few holes to fill in and I'm not liking the blocks with the white/ orange chevron fabric so I am in the process of re-working those few blocks. I've been spending quality time with my seam ripper...

I swapped out the blocks that had the white/orange chevron and now I am liking it better! This was mentally exhausting as my supply of orange is dwindling and I didn't want same fabric touching.

SoScrappy Saturday 8.24.2024

Today is the fourth Saturday of August of the color orange. Normally I would write about the Meals on Wheels/ Table Scrap challenge but Joy is waiting until next Saturday (the fifth one!) to post the link. So today is my bonus project, the Orange Splash quilt. I pieced orange as the main color because, well, I had ALL the orange out, so why not?

Finish or NOT Friday 8.23.2024

I'll take a *sorta* finish today. I did finish the piecing my 'Splash'. It's a pattern found in Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison's book Sunday Morning Quilts. I wanted mine a little smaller as it will be part of my Crumb lecture trunk show.

So what did I do instead of quilting?

I volunteered to work Thursday at the Quilt of Valor Booth at the AQS Grand Rapids Quilt Show! I enjoy talking to the show's attendees and hearing their stories. My viewing of the show is limited to glimpses on breaks...

(I really liked this photo and next year, I hope to remember to take my own like this!)

Here are a few of the booth this year. We were lucky to be given two booths! One for the area to have Signature blocks signed and one for the Fabric Relocation Station.

This is Tammy at the Fabric Relocation Station. She is so good at matching colors and fabrics that attendees would pick up what she put together and take the fabric home. Any fabric that is donated to the Michigan group that is not suitable for Quilts of Valor is cut into 1/2 yard cuts (or sometimes bigger or smaller depending on the donation) and offered for $1.00/cut suggested donation. It is one of two major fund raisers that the Michigan Quilts of Valor does. The other fundraiser takes place during the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo held in November at the Novi's Suburban Collection Showplace.

I'll be watching the free table at guild in the coming months!

This is the entrance picture that I took. I always liked the structure attendees pass through to get to the show exhibit hall.

Road update: The first layer of asphalt was laid while I was away yesterday! Yea! I wasn't trapped in/out of my house. I was told once the first layer is laid that there is a 3 hour waiting period before driving on it. Today the closest entrance to my house is getting asphalt laid and the other way, the old asphalt is being removed. Good thing that there is always something to keep me busy in the sewing room...I don't feel trapped at all. LOL

Thanks for sticking with me on this long post. <grin>

WIP Wednesday 8.21.2024

I finished the Double 4 Patch: Trip Around the World in plenty of time to take to the Scrap Lecture/Show and Share at the Howell Melon Patchers. I still have quite a few of these blocks so I have more yellow/flower quilts in my future. I bound it in a medium blue even though it looks darker in the picture.

pattern: Double 4 Patch
panto: trailing vine

I worked on my Splash from the Book Sunday Morning Quilt book by Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison. I decided to make orange as the main color and blue as the contrast. Oh no! My math seems to be a little off...I wanted to make this quilt a little smaller than the directions in the book.

I made a few adjustments and now the columns line up. Trust me... the columns are pretty close in length.

Our road is getting re-paved or rather re-asphalted. Monday the old was scraped off. Today I hope they will put more rocks down and Thursday put the first layer of asphalt on.

Design Wall Monday 8.19.2024

I do have a little something on my design wall this week.

Wednesday is Scrap Day Quilts at the Melon Patchers. I was asked to bring in a quilt with a pattern. uggghh. Lots of time, I just look at a quilt (Hello Pinterest and dead links) and adapt it to my needs/wishes/wants (???). Enter Friend 'K' who has a handful of green/purple 2.5 inch squares leftover from her chandelier quilt and wanted ideas to use them. I piped up 'Double 4 Patch' quilt. I was trying to explain but 'K' is a visual learner.

So I found my Double 4 Patch blocks that I made as leader/enders in the winter.

I twisted and turned the blocks into a few different settings.

All Diagonals the Same Way aka Streak of Lightening:

This setting is like a Chevron:

or X's and O's:

I also started another Slab quilt Splash from the Sunday Morning book by Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison. I blogged about my first one here that I gave to my brother last year during his hospital stay. This one will be orange with one blue block, the orange is in honor of the RSC color of the month!

Today is the third Saturday of August of the color orange!

Time for my Main blocks from the 2024 Stash Buster Challenge. Once again, I may have gone a little overboard!
