Finish or NOT Friday 1.30.2026

I finished my second 1/4 Log Cabin quilt. This time I did the setting in more of a 'ring' fashion...if you can call squares...rings? I like this setting the best so far!

SAHRR : Border 2: 1.29.2026

Prompt #2 was released yesterday for the SAHRR. Our hostess for this round is Kathleen McMusing. Kathleen chose 'Make it Double'. Any border element that deals with 2. I did a quick Google Search and found Double Arrow in Piece and Quilt's blog. I printed out the picture and changed the sizes so that the block is 12.5 inches unfinished. I DID make a 6.5 inch (unfinished) hourglass from the technique I learned last week. :)

Here are my four Double Arrow blocks.

Here they are all sewn into a row!

WIP Wednesday 1.28.2026

okay...I've got the second 1/4 Log Cabin pieced into a top. Once again, I used pink as my inner/stop border.

pattern: 1/4 Log Cabin. I wrote a 'cheat sheet' about 20 years ago that I still
refer to as I piece my blocks.

Design Wall Monday 1.26.2026

Happy Birthday to the State of Michigan!
189 years young!

Remember this second set of 1/4 Log Cabin blocks?

I have them on the design wall and I arrange them in (loosely) rings. If you look close, you can 'see' some have 4 blues together in the middle, followed by gray and then blues in the outer. Half the blocks are gray (middle), blue then gray in the outer.

pattern: 1/4 log cabin. I wrote a 'cheat sheet' in the late 2000's that I still
refer to today as I assemble this block.

SoScrappy Saturday 1.24.2026

Today is the fourth Saturday of January of the color blue. For this week's project, I decided to make rail fence blocks. I chose the same blue for the outer rail and a light gray for the middle. Hummmm...not exactly the look I was hoping for...

pattern: Rail fence, public domain
I cut strips at 2.5 inches, sewed along long edge then subcut at 6.5
                    inches (unfinished).

I'm going to pair the rail fence blocks with my novelties for a child's charity quilt, something along this idea. I have 'other' projects to complete, so this will wait. I should probably set aside the blue for binding...if I was smart, eh?

pattern: 6.5 inch (unfinished) novelty fabrics with 6.5 inch (unfinished) rail fence

Finish or NOT Friday 1.23.2026

One or possibly two more hurdles to go...this one needs a label and possibly, a hanging sleeve. Kane's  Memory quilt.

This is the front:

Kane was a Detroit Lions fan and I had one 'Carhartt' sleeve. This is the back.

I also finished the first of two 1/4 Log Cabin quilts that I am presenting on Wednesday January 18, 2026.

SAHRR : Round 1. 1.22.2026

The first round for the Stay At Home Round Robin was released on Wednesday. Brenda of Songbird Designs is hosting the first round. She picked hourglass as the block. She linked to Missouri Star Quilts tutorial on how to make hourglass blocks using 4 patches here. I followed the tutorial except that I started with 4 inch cut squares and trimmed my hourglass blocks to 4.5 inches square.

Why?

Because I turned my hourglass blocks into Ohio Stars!

WIP Wednesday 1.21.2026

I pieced together the inner portion of the 1/4 log cabin quilt.

I had a dilemma...do I leave it as at 54 x 72 or do I add borders? It's too large to donate to the MelonHeads and too small for the local Red Cross/Casual Quilters. I embraced all the floral and went with a pink inner and the snowflake outer (that has pink n it!) and ta-da...ready for backing, quilting and binding. It's now big enough for the local Red Cross (they wish for twin size quilts - it measures 64 x 80 before quilting).

To make the blocks, I followed this 'cheat sheet' I wrote many years ago.

Design Wall Monday 1.19.2026

I started to sew back the binding for the Memory Quilt. I like to spread the quilts out while I sew the binding back and the dining room table is the best spot. and yes, I do have a 4 foot Christmas tree I leave out all year and decorate for the 'other' holidays. Currently, it's pink for Valentine's Day!

I need to show a couple of different settings for the 1/4 log cabin block. I had shown the quilt in my 3.5 inch strip presentation and there is interest in a class. So I cut a whole heap of blues and grays. I have started to piece the blocks for two different settings.

Here are some of the blocks that I have completed.

I am also 'piling up' the second set of blocks.

I had written a 'cheat sheet' about 20 years ago and still use it, although I have updated the wording.

SoScrappy Saturday 1.17.2026

Today is the third Saturday of January of the color blue.

Procrastination has been my enemy this month, so far. I just couldn't decide on 'what' I wanted to make for RSC 2026 so, I have done nothing. Not a great start but this week, I decided to re-visit a favorite of mine: 4 patches! I pulled out a blue and gray, cut into 3.5 inch strips, sewn on the long side and cut into 6.5 inch units. The result is 38 : 4 patch units that are 6.5 inches unfinished.

pattern: 4 patch: public domain
I cut mine at 3.5 inches...6.5 ubninished block.

Finish or NOT Friday 1.16.2026

Well, this QOV is as finished as I am going to get it! The rails were pieced by attendees of AQS Quilt Week Grand Rapids 2025 in the Sewing for a Cause booth. I pieced the floating stars at the booth and Lynn (Michigan QOV Leader) pieced the top together, while in the booth! Lynn asked me to bring it home, make a backing and quilt it. Lynn has provided me with bolts of batting. The only thing...I forgot to bring home the matching fabric for the binding. Hopefully, Lynn still has some at her house!

pattern: provided by the Sewing for a Cause booth but...
the floating stars are 12.5 inches unfinished and the rails are
                6.5 inches unfinished
panto: serpentine

EDIT: Thanks to Nancy (in the comments) the pattern is Patriotic Rail Fence by
in the top row instead of Sawtooth Stars.

Another small start is my first row in the Stay at Home Round Robin, but mine will be a row by row because the math is easier for me! :) Two of the barn stars are orphans and two are newbies.

pattern: Barn Star origin: unknown
I had the directions tucked away with the orphan stars.

WIP Wednesday 1.14.2026

I did sew the binding onto the Memory Quilt. I've decided that I want to sew the binding back by hand. That will be the next hurdle with this project.

Last year for Quilting Gail's Stay at Home Round Robin, Cathy at Sane, Crazy Crumby Quilting used the prompts as a row by row instead of a round robin. I have totally fallen in love with this idea! I went to my RWB bin and found two leftover Barn Star blocks. Luckily, I had the directions in the box (amazing, right? and precut star fabric, double amazing!). The two blocks on the left are the orphans and the two on the right are the newbies.

Ta-Da! My first row for the Stay at Home Round Robin...

This is the page of directions for the Barn Star block. Origin: Unknown

Design Wall Monday 1.12.2026

I sewed the 'containment' border onto the Memory Quilt.

pattern: T-Shirt Toss

I even loaded the Memory Quilt and made a backing and loaded it onto the long arm. It's been about 3 or 4 weeks since I used the long arm, so I needed to work out a few kinks. (In both of us! <grin>)

panto: serpentine

I have quite a few seasonal wreaths that I hung on the front door in Wisconsin but I'm not able to hang them on the front door here in Michigan. So I decided to get a hanger from the Dollar Tree and enjoy my wreaths indoors and brighten my long arm photos. I do like the little bit of color on the basement bathroom door. :)
