SAHRR - Round 5 - 2.22.2026

Quilting Gail is our hostess for Round 5 in the Stay At Home Round Robin. Her prompt is '2 color'. Should be easy, right?

Maybe, maybe not...

Since I am making a row quilt instead of a medallion quilt, I thought I would make sashing as I am nearing the desired length of my quilt.

ah...maybe not....

pattern:      top row:        'curves'
second row:  'animal kingdom'...monkey wretch blocks
                  third row:      'double'....double arrow
                  fourth row:    'hour glass'...Ohio stars
                  fifth row:       'my start'...barn stars

SoScrappy Saturday 2.21.2026

Today is the third Saturday of February of the color dark green. Instead of 'so scrappy', maybe my blocks should be called 'so stashy'. As I am using the stash and not the scraps. :)

I made more 'funny' rail fences. Dark green - grey - dark green. I promise, I DO HAVE a plan...

pattern: rail fence - public domain
my rails are 2.5 inch cut green - 2.5 inch cut grey - 2.5 inch cut dark
green and sub cut the strata at 6.5 inches

Finish or NOT Friday 2.20.2025

The fun thing about smaller quilts (less than twin (60 x 80)) is that they finish faster! Less pieceing, less quilting and less binding!

My finishes for this week are the 1/4 Log Cabin Leftovers. it feels good to complete both quilts.

This first one has a fabric insert arranged horizontally.

pattern: I just call it 'Lasagna Leftovers'
                    The fabric is a 12.5 x WOF of a novelty. 2.5 inch cut top/bottom
border. I then seamed the 'leftovers' on the short end with a
straight join, cut to length to match the novelty and bordered
it all with 2.5 inch cuts. My binding is the same fabric as the
                        outer border.

The second quilt has the novelty as a vertical insert.

pattern: Lasagna Leftovers (same idea as above :))

Are these my favorite quilts? No but they will be nice donation quilts and very little of the blue and gray are leftover. The woodland print? That's another story and another quilt...<sigh>

WIP Wednesday 2.18.2026

Both of the Lasagna Leftovers took a turn on the long arm.

The Lasagna Leftover twins also both took a turn at binding. It's a little easier when the fabric for the binding is the same. :)

SAHRR - Prompt 4 - 2.17.2026

Wendy at Pieceful Thoughts is our hostess for the SAHRR2026 Border Prompt 4. Her prompt is 'curves'. This one threw me for a loop...no pun intended!

I kept thinking 'drunkard's path' but that just wasn't working for me. So, I thought, 'impromptu curves' (after all, I do like to do wonky!) but this didn't work for me either. I then decided to make a template and raw edge applique a curvy something...

Here is what I did...

But?!     What is it?

Swags?! I was going for this look...

Here are all my blocks/rows/prompts together:

patterns:      top row: curves
second row: animal kingdom...monkey wrench blocks
                    third row: double...double arrow blocks
                    fourth row: hourglass...Ohio star blocks
fifth row: this was my start...barn stars

Design Wall Monday 2.16.2026

Remember this pile of leftover 3.5 inch cut strips from the 1/4 Log Cabin Quilts, blogged here and here?

Since I had duplicates, I decided to make two leftover 'lasagna' style quilts. I looked in the stash for 'something' to coordinate but didn't find anything that I liked. So off to the local Hobby Lobby, where I found a woodland animal print that I liked.

First I made the quilt with the animals horizontal.

I then made one with the animals vertical orientation.

I'm not really 'grooving' to either one but I did use up the leftover 3.5 inch strips so I am considering it a win!

SoScrappy Saturday 2.14.2026

Today is the second Saturday of February of the color dark green. I felt like an easy block, so I made a set of green and grey 4 patches.

pattern: 4 patch - public domain
My 4patches are made with strips cut at 3.5 inches.
The blocks are 6.5 inches unfinished

Not very exciting but the mindless sewing my soul needs....

Finish or NOT Friday 2.13.2026

I finished my Echoes quilt this week. I decided to make the corners the same colors and did half in reds and the other half of the blocks in blue. I used 48 blocks in this quilt. I like the simplicity of it.  :)

WIP Wednesday 2.11.2026

My National Sew Day Echoes quilt took it's turn on the long arm.

This quilt also took it's turn with binding.

If you are interested in my methodology for sewing the binding by machine to the front and back...read on but be aware! I took a lot of pictures as I explain this.

First, I cut my bindings at 2.5 inches.

I sew with a 2007 Brother QC 1000. Stitch length set at 2.5 to make the binding. I use a 90/14 Quilting needle and Permacore thread either 30 or 40 weight (this is what I run through my long arm)

Second, I join my binding strips on a diagonal.

Third, I trim the excess.

Fourth, I press the seam open and them press the binding in half...wrong sides together.

Fifth, I wrap it on my binding baby for safe keeping until I am ready to use it.

When I am ready to bind, I start on the bottom of the quilt right side up approximately in the middle and cut off the selvage of the binding.

Next, I use wonder clips to hold the binding at the start and leave about an 8 - 10 inch tail. I also set my stitch length to 3.0 on my Baby Brother machine.

I match my top thread to the binding and the bobbin to the color I quilted with. I pull up the bobbin thread and take a locking stitch. I try to keep my binding and presser foot line up with the raw edge of the quilt top. This is about 3/8 of an inch from the needle to the raw edge of the quilt.

I continue around the quilt, mitering the corners as I go. When I come to the ending/beginning join, I use a 2.5 inch cut square I keep by my machine to measure for the join. I line up my square with the bottom edge of the binding. I then measure the top binding. Some cut at exactly matching but I choose to fold and cut the top (or end) binding 3/8 of an inch shorter than the measuring square.

Bottom binding piece is down, top is up so right sides together and rotate for a 45 degree sewing join.

I finger press the seam open and then finger press the binding to smooth it out. I also check to make sure 'it looks right' before I trim. I then finish the seam to attach the binding.

Next, I change the bobbin thread to match the binding.

I flip the quilt over, pull the binding to the back, use two wonder clips to secure the start of my sewing. When I pull the binding to the back, I try to match the edge of the binding with the sewing line of the binding. That way, I know that I am sewing close to the front edge of the binding.

Every so often, I check the front to make sure 'it looks good'.

I sew along and do the miters like I am hand sewing but use wonder clips to hold in place.

I pivot at the corner and continue sewing down the quilt. I do use the open end of the lobster pick as a stiletto. I brought the lobster pick at the grocery store Pick n Save when I lived in Wisconsin. I have NOT found as nice lobster pick here in Michigan.

I continue around until I reach where I began and lock the stitches in.

Is it perfect? No...but I do like this look better than the other ways I have experimented with. It takes me about an hour or 1.5 hours to bind as opposed to much longer when I hand sew the binding back. :)

Thanks for coming along with my binding method!

Wrapping up Christmas...sorta 2.9.2026

I had prepped 20 mini stocking cuffs for the 2026 Meals-on-Wheels stocking drive my night guild is hosting. The goal is to have 1500 mini stockings to given to be distributed in December 2026. My original plan was to make 10-12 mini stockings per month and turn them in. Well, the count is nearing 1000 so I thought I better get my prepped ones done and counted!

I thought it would be a cute idea to 'stage' the stocking on my 4 foot tree...

...maybe not. They really don't show well. Looks like I need to add a tree skirt to my 'to do' list.

<sigh>

On the dining room table is a QOV (that needs to be put away!) with a light backing. AH HA...perhaps the stockings would show up better.

Yes, I'm liking this just a little better. Total number of mini stockings in this batch is 22.

pattern: Casual Quilter's original (I think)

I'm sharing today with you! No linky!
