WIP Wednesday 4.26.2023

I started making the migrating flying geese but I think, something is wrong with my math!

My flying geese are 4.5 x 2.5 (cut) and with the spacers to get the migrating effect, they are 2.5 x 8.5 inches. So the borders are a whopping 16 inches together! If I add the outer border, the quilt will be about 67 x 76. That's a major oops I my part. Looks like I didn't need to add the little red side border. It's 4 inches and that is about how much I am too wide--for my liking. Live and learn, I am not ripping it out! In fact, after much debate (with myself!) I went ahead and added the outer border of migrating geese.

I was struggling with the directions, so I decided to make migrating
                        geese.

I'll add another red border but I ran out of time before I had to switch gears. I usually sew my binding on at 3/8 inches and I will be guaranteed to 'hide' all those goose points!

Design Wall Monday 4.24.2023

I decided to pull one of my QOV panels out and give the pattern 'Pattern Plus' a try.

I couldn't make heads or tails out of the pattern but I really liked this pattern I had found on Pinterest.

In my pattern stash, I found directions for the migrating geese border.

And I'm off! Here is my first step in combining these few patterns.

SoScrappy Saturday 4.22.2023

Today is the fourth Saturday of April of the color purple. One of my favorite colors!

Time for my braid. I'm trying to keep the lights on one side and darks on the other.

Finish or NOT Friday 4.21.2023

I have a finish!

I was struggling with the number (and colors!) for my Crayon Orphan Block quilt. As I was trolling Pinterest I saw this quilt and it's like the light dawned. I could set the crayons vertical rather than horizontal. The result would be a 'square-er' quilt. Both the local Red Cross and the Catholic Church where my guild meets, would like a stash of 'baby quilts'. So this will be donated through my guild.

Every so often, it's time to sew batting pieces together. I had a quick 'Fraken-batt' session for this quilt. It is a great candidate for 'Fraken-batt' as the size it more manageable and the colors are mostly darker. I would hate for the batting seam to show through the quilt.

The finished quilt.

Since I'm entering it into the guild Orphan Block Challenge, I wanted to use a seldom used pantograph.

WIP Wednesday 4.19.2023

I sashed my jelly roll blocks, simply with a red. I needed a bit more length, so I added a few 2.5 inch squares sewn into a strip. Truth be told, I had two leftover light blue strata and two leftover dark blue strata. I just cut off the appropriate size and sewed it together! Yea for 'using what you have'!

I'm calling this one done and will plan on a quilting-polooza to long arm my growing collections of flimsies (aka UFO's!). 😍

The 2023 Casual Quilters Challenge is Orphan Blocks. The quilts are due at the June meeting for voting. The winner receives a cash prize and runs the following year Challenge. I was looking for something totally different that doesn't 'scream PAT' and settled on the crayon blocks from RSC2021. I had decided against using the brown and teal crayons in the 2021 quilt  (you'll need to scroll down as I never gave this quilt it's own finished post) so those were my base for the 2023 Orphan Block Challenge. I made more crayons in red, yellow and orange. I'm trying to decide on how many more crayons to make. That will determine the size of the quilt. I was wanting to stay away from purple...my purple stash is dwindling and I feel purple/pink will send this quilt to a more feminine tone than I want.

Design Wall Monday 4.17.2023

I took my 2 gallon baggies of 2.5 inch blue and red strips to sew day last Thursday. I proceeded to sew one blue baggie strips end to end and made a big blue jelly roll.

I then cut the jelly roll into 14 inch lengths with my, gasp, scissors. I had a few of the same fabric so I tried to distribute the strips out.

I then sewed them into pairs. I keep three sets of pairs together, sewed them into a unit and trimmed to 12.5 inch blocks.

H2H First Check In 4.16.2023

Today is the first check-in for the Hands2Help Quilt Drive that Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict hosts just about every year!

Well, except for last year when Mari at Academic Quilter stepped in when Sarah was unable to run the drive. Thanks Mari!

My first H2H project this year was to go into my UFO closet and pull out one to quilt and donate. This sailboat quilt had a really bright yellow sky that I swapped out for seagulls. It's much calmer now and ready to be gifted. The sailboat blocks were from my guild tag sale that someone had donated. I think it turned out cute that either a boy or girl will love when it finds it's 'forever' home.

SoScrappy Saturday 4.15.2023

Today is the third Saturday of April of the color purple! One of my favorite colors!

Time for my Northwinds blocks. I had enough of a darker purple to make the set of four.

Finish or NOT Friday 4.14.2023

I am continuing working on the 2.5 inch strips I have. This quilt concentrated on the bag of reds. I am also sending this one along to the FB QOV Working Stars group...so this is as finished as it will be here!

pattern inspiration: I found this quilt on Pinterest and adapted it for 2.5 in strips.
Of course, I can't find the link but trust me, it was a dead one!

At our Sew Day yesterday, I was privileged to attend a Quilt of Valor Award Ceremony. This is Hebert L. and he served in the Marines from 1953-1955 (during his high school years) and in the Army from 1955-1964. Thank You 'Bert' for your service! Gladys, one of our co-chairs, did the presentation.

WIP Wednesday 4.12.2023

My FB Quilt of Valor Stars group is hosting a raffle for, you guessed it, patriotic quilty prizes. To enter, you either need to send blocks or quilt tops to our administrator. This week, I have been concentrating on making tops to send. (Hence all the stars from my Monday post. LOL)

When I was moving my fabric to higher ground, I was amazed at the number of red, white and blue 2.5 inch strips I had! Just about every time I had RWB on the cutting table, I cut a 2.5 inch strip and boy, did they all pile up.

So far, this is what I have been able to sew together.

*Unfurled by Lisa Sutherland.

It's a free pattern but I don't know for how much longer. Her website says that she will leave it up until 12.31.2022 but then it will come down. But we are already past her expiration date....

It's another free pattern with an expiration date of 12.31.2022

I have a few more stars so I'll be making one more to send. It's not a Lisa pattern but very similar to hers. It's kind cool...stay tuned...

Design Wall Monday 4.10.2023

I decided to make a few 12.5 inch (unfinished) stars.

I may have gotten carried away. :)

SoScrappy Saturday 4.8.2023

Today is the second Saturday of April of the color purple. One of my favorite colors!

It's 'houses and huts' day. I actually made these last year as a test for this year's RSC. I blogged about the purple house and hut here.

So...here we are again. The 'official' RSC2023 purple house.

Finish or NOT Friday 4.7.2023

I have a finish for today!

Yes! My April Showers/May Flowers is completed! It actually came together really fast. I suppose the bigger panel combined with big tulips and rain clouds did the trick! LOL
